LOVE this film! The original, Japanese version (Hollywood got the plot from this one.) You will love, laugh and feel for all the characters. A perfect heartfelt comedy... :)
Hehe! That's right! Very cute movie - a real favorite of mine. I couldn't bare to watch the Jlo/Gere Hollywood version!
Because the central premise of the film is that Japanese, especially of his generation, are uncomfortable publicly touching each other - In fact, it was considered a bit shameful. That's where the real comedy and pathos comes in.
How they have to sneak around secretly and make lame excuses as to where they where to hide the fact that he and the others where taking ballroom dancing lessons at night. He fell for the beautiful dance teacher he saw through the commuter train going home initially... that was his motivation at first.
I don't want to give too much away, but I know that you will fall in love with this movie too! :) And yes, the Shall We Dance title is from the dance studio's founders memories of the Deborah Kerr/ Yul Brenner dance sequence in the King And I... ^^
I could have guessed as much! :) I gave the Anniversary Edition to The Princesses not too long ago, and they loved it, especially that scene! ^^ It is an amazing performance! The fairly recent Anna and The King disappointed me somewhat. They soundtrack is awesome though. One of my favorite soundtracks of all time!
We shall stock this and My Fair Lady on Paradise Island one day! :P
I couldn't watch it, 'cause I loved the original so, and knew what Hollywood would do to it. Perhaps a few peeps saw Dansu because of the Gere/Jlo version? We can only hope so...
I loved Jlo in Selena and Gere in Chicago and a few others, so I am not against them per se. Even the so called Indie movies have largely been seduced by Hollywood's money.

Speaking of Independent Film, have you seen the Canadian film Eve and the Fire Horse?
I saw it at the San Diego Asian Film Festival, and it's finally on DVD now. Might be easier to find for rent in Canada, I hope! :)
